The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The ex-president was convicted of plotting a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than over two decades in prison, but he remained under confinement pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after recent developments were revealed.

This involved attempting to break his tracking device and a summons to a demonstration that could "allow for a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the detention, the judge said information from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the surveillance device to ensure success in his getaway".

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His child, his son Flávio, who works as a legislator, called for a gathering of his supporters near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

The senator wrote on online platforms on last Friday: Will you battle for your nation, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your couch? I invite you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could "pray for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the possibility of the former president's transfer to embassies near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of arranging to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The legal document emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is situated around 13km from his dwelling.

Global Responses

His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative United States President Donald Trump, leading him to implement a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.

Bolsonaro is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will have a custody hearing on the next day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with digital surveillance.

They also requested that the former president be permitted to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he demanded ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of heading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the presidential race to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plot which encompassed plans to murder Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was thwarted because it didn't receive the support of the armed forces officials. Lula was inaugurated without issue on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, thousands of his followers attacked and damaged official structures in the capital, the capital city.

The law enforcement intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by him whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to step in, restore order and reinstate his authority.

At the period, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The former president called the court case a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
