The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
